With Podcamp Pittsburgh 4 looming over us, I get reminded of what people really want. They want to make money on their podcast or blog. At least that point is out in the open. There are some other things that you won’t learn at Podcamp which reminds of us why we’re there. The thing people really don’t mention is that they really want fame which begets fortune. Well, I’m sorry to say that that ain’t gunna happen.

I learned the hard way that gaining numbers of downloads on a podcast isn’t the right [read: correct] way of creating content for your audience. I say your audience because there will be a certain number of people that will listen to and enjoy your rantings and ramblings. You need to make that audience your own. Jason knows that he can put people to sleep. Jason knows that a lot of people won’t like his show or points of view… just look at the reviews on iTunes!

Give us a place to stand and we will move the Earth. ~Archimedes

A podcast is like a TV show. Not everyone is willing to commit the time to watch/listen. For some reason, people think that everyone will like their blog or podcast while TV shows are geared to a particular audience that likes a particular “thing.” I do a certain type of show in a certain manner for a certain type of people. If you don’t like that, I really don’t give a shit; shut up about it.

The whole point of this is to say that you will most likely not have an audience that numbers in the millions… or thousands. Do what you like to do and what satisfys you! Also remember that an audience of 50 reading a blog is more than would listen to you preach outside of city hall. As far as I’m concerned, if I can help just one person, I have been a success. Podcasting and blogging give us a place to stand from which we may be able to move the Earth.

I was nervous and in awe of many of my cohorts. Now, some of the numbers about downloads, etc. may be wrong on the slides, so be warned. I had about 12 people in the class that covered issues with having listeners around the globe. I had NO idea how the gay thing would go over in the ‘Burgh at time time. It went ok despite my nervousness. Enjoy!

Well, the countdown to my favorite yearly event is upon us. PodCamp Pittsburgh 3 is October 17-19 and is a great weekend of FREE events. I did quite a bit to help out in organizing the event up until my illness got the better of me. I’m right now working on a session that I can present. A few questions were posed to PCPGH3 people and I though I’d share my answers. You can read about my sponsorship of PodCamp Pittsburgh here!

What brought you to Social Media and what keeps you hanging around?

Well, I’ve told the story quiet a few times, but I got extremely angry about an article that appeared in The Advocate about 3 years ago. I thought that this new type of broadcasting called podcasting was a great way to get my point out there. 150 episodes later, I still love to use it to let off some steam.

Which social networking tool gives you the shakes when it’s not updated or is experiencing down time? (Podcasts, Blogs, Micro-blogging, etc)

My podcast and blog CANNOT be down! It drives me crazy if that happens. Luckily, I have a great provider and a dedicated server that I maintain. It costs $90/month, but is very worth it! Twitter I don’t use for long stretches because their availability sucks and it pisses me off.

I do get frustrated when my favorite podcasts disappear or no longer create new content. It makes me sad, so I understand your frustration some times.

What kind of insight could you offer to others on a topic at PCPGH3? If none, then what do you most want to hear more about?

First, I’d like to hear more about using social media to get me out of the house! :-) No, seriously, as anti-social as I tend to be, I would like to get out more and conduct interviews with people on the street, politicians, and visiting pseudo-celebrities.

I feel that I can offer some great insight on worldwide audiences, diversity in social media, how to present oneself vocally in a personal show, and on the technical ends.

For this first time in a while I am actually proud of something. My voice was going and I just had to get my 150th episode of the podcast for my third anniversary (23 June 2005). I decided to do a nice restrospect, showing different ideas and time periods of my own development. It’s hard to believe how far I’ve travelled in three years. From a small basement apartment in New Jersey to Pittsburgh, JasonCable.com’s GLBT Podcast has made great strides. Please enjoy my favorite show moments and see just how much I’ve managed to cover with your help. I love you all for your support over the years and look forward to hearing from you ALL in the future so we can change the face of podcasting! ~Jason

P.S. The total download count for all shows combined has surpassed 250,000!
