Podcasting = Wayne’s World?

November 3rd, 2008 by jason

I went to Best Buy today (a favorite haunt) and was checking out the movie section and got the movie Wayne’s World for something like $6.49 USD.  It really got me thinking about podcasting… and my taste in movies.  Podcasting is like the beginning of the movie.  We’re little guys just having fun doing our own thing and most often out of the realm of having boundaries set by large corporate owners and advertisers.  So many people want to be able to make money out of what we have today in social media and everyone but the largest podcasts fail at it.  I’ve tried to make money here and it hasn’t worked.  In fact, I find the opportunities lacking simply due to the size of my audience.

I will gloat a little here and say that yes, I could increase the number show listeners by changing the format of the show and topics covered.  That probably will not happen because it would be way out of my comfort zone and is not my current goal.  I like to get information out to my listeners which is new and from a certain point of view.  I find it to be in my own style.  Like me or not, it’s what I want to do.  Of course I would love to do this for a living and make money at it, but alas, that is not happening anytime soon less a pitch fork stab me in the ass and force me to do so.

Once I get more established with my new psychologist he would probably say that I don’t like to change once I’m comfortable with something.  That’s true.  I’m a stubborn, pompous ass that loves to hear other points of view and make my OWN decisions… which do change over time.  PodCamp Pittsburgh really helped me see that I want to present a certain point of view that may be unpopular but necessary for people to hear.

The movie climaxes (several times) with Wayne and Garth selling out their cable access TV show and everything going to hell.  Well, the more we want to make money in podcasting, I think the more likely we are to go the way of the Waynes and Garths of this world.  I don’t want to see independent voices stifled, especially mine.  Yeah, I may not be in the healthiest state, but I’ll keep up my FREE work as long as at least one person is still listening.  This is ME, not what someone else wants from me.  It’s really the only place that affords such a luxury.
