It was a cool night in New Hope, PA in late 2004 or 2005 and I was waiting for a concert at a local school auditorium. I was scared out of my mind. Arriving several hours earlier, alone, I wandered throughout the quaint gay-friendly tourist town of scarcely a few thousand residents an hour north of Philadelphia. Jason & deMarco were giving their Spirit Pop concert in a tour of smaller venues throughout the U.S. Now, you may wonder why I was terrified. The main reason is because I was alone and going to an intimate concert given by my favorite gay music artists. I had just found out about them a month or so earlier on the radio (you know what station). I can only date the concert by these facts: it was after they released their CD Spirit Pop and before their article in XY and appearance on Derek & Romaine. I think they had already had appeared in The Advocate in an issue I didn’t read until after the concert. The XY magazine article had a hotter-than-hot picture of them.
I wrote about that day at the time but unfortunately cannot find how I described that day. There were scarcely 50 people in the auditorium and they gave one hell of a show. I can only wish that the “straight” pop stars can sing that good. Jason & deMarco are partners in business and life, gay, and Christian. I was first drawn to their Christian music but found their “pop” album to be just wonderful. Every one in a while I check out their website and today found that they had a documentary filmed about them last year that is playing on ShowTime now. According to the site, it describes their struggle in breaking into the music business. I guess it covers their rejection from both the LGBT and Christian music communities which I find just dreadful.
Rarely do we find people who are this talented who just happen to be gay. Is that hampering their career? Sure. Is being gay and Christian a problem? Sure. It’s a damned shame. I own all the CDs of one group, these guys. The Ave Maria on their Christmas album makes me quiver every listen. Please check them out and go to a concert if they come near you. It is certainly worth it!
