4 Hours Lost

June 7th, 2008 by jason

Well, Ford sucks… AGAIN! My lovely 2006 Ford Escape with 26K miles has another problem. Thank God for that warranty. This time the parking brake has locked up one of the rear wheels. Of course, I need to use the e-brake because it’s a stick. It took 4 hours for a tow truck to show up after having called Ford’s roadside assistance number. Next time I’ll call AAA. Below is the list of repairs thus far. How much do you think Ford has spend repairing this piece of garbage?

  1. Rear tail light assembly (at 3 days old) because water was getting in.
  2. Parking brake adjustment because it didn’t hold on a slight incline.
  3. Throttle body because accelerator was sticking in the up position. I’m told that this is common in the Escape.
  4. Driver window adjusted and lubed because it did not go down.
  5. Idler pulley and serpentine replaced due to pulley chewing up serpentine belt and squealing during cold weather operation.
  6. Clutch replaced under warranty (I had to drive 120 miles a dealer that would honor the warranty). Once replaced they…
  7. REPLACED (did not rebuild) the 2006 transmission/gear box with a 2007. They could not rebuild it due to the fact that Ford corporate couldn’t supply the parts. The 2nd time the clutch and tranny were assembled…
  8. The dealer replaced broken axle which was damaged while reassembling drive train components.
  9. [Update] Out-of-round rims.  One front wheel took 13 oz. of weight to balance.

6, 7, & 8 took a total of about 21 days to “fix”. The thing runs like a piece of crap. Did I mention that the value has fallen dramatically and I can’t give it away!?!?

I thought you had a Jeep Wrangler.

Was it wrecked before you bought it?

Resale is likely related to the price of gas. GM is closing down their major SUV plants and selling off Hummer altogether.

Assuming you’re looking for basic commuter transportation, have you considered a smart or a honda fit?

I have a 2002 Jeep Wrangler that I purchased a year ago off of eBay from a local physician. At the time I had a great chance at winning my Lemon Law case against Ford. Due to the ability of Ford to appeal any Allegheny County arbitration decisions which take about 18 mos., I decided to settle with Ford. I put that settlement money on the vehicle’s loan and STILL owe too much. I am making 2 car payments.

Once I can get rid of the Ford, I plan on getting something that’s automatic (and used) to commute with.
