Podcamp Toronto Wrapup

February 25th, 2008 by jason

I hate a great time at Podcamp Toronto.  It was great meeting everyone.   This was my first time out of town for non-work, non-family reasons in about 2 1/2 years.  Suffice it to say, I needed a weekend away.  I got to come out of my shell and meet many new people.  Still, I’m not great at that, but am getting better. I must apologize for the class I gave, Into to Blogging.  I had no idea that my laptop would not function.  I wanted to give a beginner’s guide to blogging with wordpress.com.  Unfortunately, Dell decided to make my video driver interfere with the keyboard by sending Ctrl character sequences when the external VGA port was switched on.  And, because it’s Windows, I tried a reboot with no help.  Next time, I’m using my Mac and need to buy the std. VGA adapter.  I learned one extremely important thing at Podcamp Toronto that I didn’t consider in the past, other countries are drawn to different sites, etc.  Americans use MySpace.  Canadians use FaceBook.  I had never set up a FaceBook group or page because I figured that MySpace was good enough (although, I don’t update it as much as I need to).  Who knew? One beef I had with a certain person at Podcamp is that there are few certainties in the “new media” environment (podcasting, blogging, social networking, etc.).  I’ve had my podcast for nearly 3 years and have found that certain things work and others don’t.  A lot of it depends on your audience.  Hard-fast rules are great, but when creating media for others, often for niche audiences, you must conform to what your listeners, readers, watchers want.  Also, Friday night I received two voicemails from my podcast listeners that were great.  If anyone wants to know why I podcast, listen to the next episode, which will be soon (as in this week).  I love getting comments and would love to hear from everyone.  Leave a voice message (US & Canada) at 888-272-5848, email me at jason [at] jasoncable.com, respond to a blog post, etc.
