For Christmas, I received a great book called Ethel Merman: A Life by Brian Kellow. It’s an honest look into this phenomenal performer’s life. Brian Kellow, a fellow gay man, pulls no punches while talking about Ethel and her friends. He’s not afraid to out gay performers of the past and even J. Edgar Hoover. I first heard of the book on Sirius OutQ’s Frank DeCaro Show. Mr. Kellow interviewed some 130 of Merman’s contemporaries, bringing great insight into her life. An entertaining read and recommended.

He doesn’t over-analyze Merman’s life or what she was thinking at certain times, like many biographers will do. I like that most about the book. If you click the link below to buy it, you will be helping support the podcast and blog.
