Ya know, people placed into superficial groups such as the GLBT group are just not always to get along.  This week on the gay podcasters email list there was a little spat over asking for votes for some stupid web-created award.  Frankly, most awards are stupid, but that’s for another day (unless I get one).  Here’s my cleaned up version of what I believe is just a good life lesson.

Oh, come on. I don’t resent popular podcasts and I certainly don’t envy them. The more listeners you have, the more nasty, hate-filled listeners you have (not always, but look at my iTunes comments). Yes, there are podcasts that have 10 times the listeners I do [fact]. That’s NOT the point. Each of us does our own thing and have our own audience. I obviously don’t try to be everything to everyone; my listeners don’t like that. I don’t have the money for that nor do I want to be the podcast of podcasts.

My job is to have fun at this “new media” stuff. I have a nice, dedicated listener base that probably uses my podcast to fall asleep. We should be friendly to each other and help each other thrive.

Think about it… by having a show as popular as ???, they have shown the community (new media, not just GLBT) that there IS an audience for gay podcasts. Believe it or not, that IS an achievement! It shows the world that WE can do it too.

My suggestion is to do what you do best and stick to a format that you are comfortable with. If you want ratings and awards and a cookie, then become the next Fox News! Otherwise, remember that there are some of us that are leading the way for others in this emerging media… one step at a time.

I’m not specifically defending ???, but everyone. Let’s stop pointing fingers and band together. If you want to reach a larger audience, ask!!!  Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
