We all get sad from time to time. As some may think, my issues are NOT caused by me being gay. It just isn’t so. I had a psychologist once that tried to pin all of my issues to my sexual orientation. Does that mean that all straight people suffer from depression because they aren’t gay? (Little joke there…) About 30 years ago the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association removed homosexuality as a mental illness from their rosters. This was a seminal step towards our rights that has unfortunately not been adopted by all.
Depression can, of course, result from issues we have with our sexual orientation. Just pick any of a number of my podcasts to see how certain issues could cause depression, but alas, that’s not my problem. I’m sure I have skeletons in my closet that need closer examination and confrontation, but let’s leave it alone for now. My whole point is that many GLBT people lead normal, happy lives and are content with themselves. Let’s stop blaming surface issues and get to the heart of the matter.
Also, let’s not make depression a crutch in our lives and blame it for all that is wrong with us. I try not to do this. What!?!?! Some of you are saying this right now. Yes, I do blame depression for confining me to my apartment, but not for not getting laid and not having a boyfriend. Those are side issues that stem from my other issues. I don’t go around crying about these things, but realize that if I could find the right treatment that I could and would lead a “normal’ life.
