MacWorld ‘08 Update Predictions

December 12th, 2007 by jason

Well, every year at the MacWorld Expo, next January 12-18 in San Francisco, Apple CEO Steve Jobs gives a keynote address that rocks the Mac world.  To join in the fodder, I give my guesses as to what updates we’ll see.

  1. Second generation iPhone with ATT 3G network support along with the much awaited iPhone SDK and an announcement from a GPS vendor such as Garmin for optional off-network navigation.
  2. An updated Mac Pro.  We haven’t seen and update in a while but how do you trump 2-4way procs?  I don’t know.  I’m guessing a price drop.
  3. As for the MacBook line, everyone wants higher screen resolutions in the same form factors.  It’s inevitable.
  4. Use of that $15 billion USD of Apple, Inc. cash.  They could announce a potential merger.  Bets on Adobe anyone?  It’s their best chance but Apple doesn’t do anything with Windows software.

I think our best bet is an iPhone update.  Other than that, we’ve seen most of the line updated recently.  There isn’t much else to update.

I hope they will update the MacBook Pro — if not at MWSF, then in the following months. Not necessary all-new, but several details would be fine. Newer CPU, chipset (Penryn?? don’t know if that’s for mobile, too), LED 17″… alternatively, making it less expensive. ;-)

And regarding “Apple doesn’t do anything with Windows software”, remember QuickTime, iTunes, and Safari… all available on Windows.
OK, still no large applications as their Pro series. I think in case of doubt they will simply do what seems to be opportune in a larger point of view. Many users own an Apple product such as a iPod or iPhone as well as a Windows PC. This target group will influence Apple’s decisions.

Thinking of Adobe, what if Apple would buy them and would then, step by step, make the Windows versions of their products inferior to the Mac versions? Would professionals switch from PC to Mac? Note that buying a Mac means having the possibility to run OS X as well as Windows. If so, this could be a realistic scenario. Even more so since there are not that many alternatives to Adobe on the PC.

I will try to buy some Apple shares again. One year ago this was very fruitful even from a Euro country…

I’m hoping for the Ultra-portable MacBook Pro. Who knows, maybe we’ll even get multi-touch technology in it. Aside from that, an upgraded iPhone would be sweet!

Jason, Stefan (last commenter) are you going to the show?? Let’s meet up!

    Scott,

Boy, I wish I could go. It would be a very wet dream of mine, but alas, I just started my job a few months ago and am a contract-to-hire, so I don’t get paid vacation, holidays, etc. If they announce an updated iPhone with 3G, I’m in…. especially since 3G just got rolled out to Pittsburgh. The interface on the Samsung Blackjack totally blows for web surfing…
