I really enjoyed the debate last night. If we’re looking at gay rights, and learning what I have about the top candidates, I would say that Hillary Clinton and John Edwards are at the top of my list. Kucinich seems to want gay marriage outright, but I truly don’t think he’s going to make it with the people. Yes, yes. Please feel free to disagree. I did not say Barack Obama because I’ve found in multiple places that he would make gay marriage a personal religious issue. Last night he said that the issue of whether gay marriage should be allowed must be up to individual religious denominations. What the fuck!?! I thought that marriage laws were conferred to the states, not religious institutions. This is bringing religion into politics, which must not happen. Since George W. Bush said that he was appointed by God to do the job of President, I’m done with this shit. Religion does NOT constitute our legal system, does it?
John Edwards has strong religious feelings on the issue of gay marriage. He does NOT believe that his religious beliefs should influence his decision on the issue. With his wife’s coming out as a supporter of gay marriage rights I do believe that he is terribly worried about his personal responsibility towards making a choice on whether gay marriage should be allowed. Hillary’s stand on gay rights has always been one of equality. From my research, it seems that she truly wants us to have fair and equal rights. I need to see more.
It was interesting that a well-rumored gay man such as Anderson Cooper had balls enough to actually ask Senator Obama whether allowing gay marriage is the same as allowing racially integrated marriages as in the 1967. Damn! I loved it. I have a very hard time believing that Obama is truly on our side. To me, he seems to be out running for himself, not the people. A lot of people think the same about Senator Clinton. I disagree. She’s very smart, well educated on the issues, and wants what’s best for the people. The same can be said for John Edwards. I’d elect him in a heart beat. And for the record, yes, I did vote for Hillary during her first senatorial campaign against homophobe Rick Lazio.
I’d like to see more debates that feature questions by ordinary people. Don’t give me Sam Donaldson, Wolf Blitzer, or Jim Lehrer giving the questions, but ordinary people that were able to speak freely in a hopefully unrehearsed way.
