7:00 - About 3,000 questions were submitted to ask the US 2008 Presidential candidates via YouTube. I’ll be commenting “live” on gay and lesbian issues. Here’s what happened.
7:13 - Barack Obama is getting the loud cheers so far. Interesting. Lots of Republican trashing. John Edwards made a very good comment about getting big business out of Washington.
7:23 - Lots on racial issues. Interesting.
7:27 - Gay marriage question.
Sen. Kucinich, yes. - All are created equal and quality of equality before the law. All should have same rights.
Sen. Dodd, yes (even though he supported the Defense of Marriage Act) - How would you like it if you had daughters that were of a different orientation? They would deserve the same rights via Civil Unions.
Gov. Richardson, yes - Full marriage rights. Strike down “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Domestic partner laws and non-discrimination laws.
7:30 - cont’d
Question to fmr. Sen. Edwards… why deny gay marriage based on religious beliefs? Is it right to impose faith beliefs on American people as President. Answer: Civil Unions??? Very conflicted. Against “gay marriage.” Respects people with different views than him. Won’t use faith based judgements as President to obstruct people’s rights.
7:35 - Question to Obama from Anderson Cooper, why is allowing gay marriage any different than abolishing interracial marriage laws that was done in the 1967? Answer: All should be equal under the law. Rights conferred by states should be equal for gays and straights. Marriage as a term should be a religious term determined by religious denominations. Legal rights should be conferred by gov’t.
7:44 - My times might be a little off because of TiVO. Sorry.
8:02 - Hillary and others want women to register for Selective Service (the draft) at age 18 like all men have to.
8:08 - Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama seem to be the most popular up on the dais. Edwards and Cucinich are a tied distant third.
8:22 - Lots of their kids went to private (religious) schools. Big shock. It’s nice to see that several went to public schools. It’s so important for bettering our society.
8:24 - Sex education questions about amount and age appropriateness. Sen. Edwards sounds like he did a good job. I think children need taught about spotting possible sexual predators in public and online.
8:26 - Global warming. A very important question that MUST be addressed. Go Hillary! saying that we haven’t addressed the issue completely.
8:30 - Nuclar [sic] power. Edwards: no. Obama: explore it; no easy answers. Clinton: agnostic; let’s study the best solutions; renewable energy can create new jobs. I like it, but there is really no way to dispose of the spent fuel.
8:33 - Fixing voting. Standardize it. PLEASE!!! Richardson: verify paper trails; same-day registration; no Republican suppression of voters.
8:39 - Money… the minimum wage. Problems with raising the minimum wage, but not with raising congress’s wages. Should senators work for the minimum wage? YES! I agree with the one guy that says that we need to have a “living wage,” not just a “minimum wage.” One dude said the minimum wage should be $10. WOW.
8:42 - Social Security, stop the cap. Once you earn 97K per year, you stop paying SS taxes until the start of the next year. Maybe that ceiling should be removed. I pay for it, I want it.
8:50 - This is getting boring fast. I need to get some food to eat. Later.
